The Kastro, or lower town of Monemvassia, is reached through the main gate, of which there were five. Past the chicane, built to slow down attackers, is the main street. Despite the souvenir shops, a typically medieval atmosphere is created by the loose cobblestones, stone walls and Gothic doorways. The street leads past ancient houses to the main square.
