From Matala's main street, a path leads to the creeks of Red Beach, which are very pleasant, but offer no shade. Naturism is tolerated. North of Matala, Kommos beach is a huge strip of sand, lapped by the rolling waves, without shade and not very busy. Kalamaki, 7km away, is a small seaside resort, the seafront of which is a wall of concrete. The tavernas and bars are lively in the evenings.
