For safety reasons, tourists are strongly advised to avoid this region. Situated between Mae Sai and Mae Chan, Doi Tung rises to an altitude of 1 404m and is crowned by a Buddhist temple (Wat Phra That Doi Tung) affording a splendid overall view of the Mekong Valley. On the mountain slopes, maize and strawberries have replaced the opium poppy, following the decision of the king in the 1960s to try to put an end to the trafficking of drugs fashionable at the time.
