The gardens stretch across the hillside not far from the Avenida da Liberdade. They were laid out in 1873 for scientific purposes and are now run by the Academy of Science. They rate among the most interesting in Europe for their sub-tropical plants. With their magnificent avenue of palm trees, the gardens are a haven of peace in a busy quarter of Lisbon.
