On the island of Cythera, in an impressive mountain cirque, are the remains of a Byzantine citadel, formerly the island's capital, built after the 12C. It had numerous churches and its population lived here in peace until the 1537 pirate attack by Barbarossa, which destroyed a large part of the town.
