This major Shinto shrine was founded in the 11C by Minamoto no Yoriyoshi. The Nagatoko, the most remarkable building and unique in Japan, is depicted by a huge prayer hall open to the outdoors resting on 44 pillars beneath a thatched roof. The three small shrines a little further up the mountain are home to statues of divinities that are not visible. The treasure features several Important Cultural Properties, among which a copper basin (1341) and a statue of Buddha seated on a lion, dating from the Heian period (794-1185).
