Ancient archaeological sites mark the windswept coastline of north Kohala. Puukohola Heiau was built as a temple around 1550 and reconstructed in 1791 by Kamehameha I, who treacherously murdered his last Big Island rival here to dedicate the temple and make himself supreme chief. As British sailor John Young looked on, the king built the temple himself, along with his chiefs and commoners-men, women and children. A rival was sacrificed, so the war god Ku would be pleased.
