The Sierra Gorda Missions Road, which starts at Jalpan (190km to the northeast of Querétaro), takes you to five 18C Franciscan missions with extraordinary restored polychrome façades. They were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. The exteriors are more impressive than the interiors, which were restored in the 19C and painted in a very sober style.
