Tucked into a hillside overlooking the National Elk Refuge, this sandstone complex (1994) is nearly invisible. Its rough-hewn exterior resembles Anasazi ruins. Within are 12 exhibition galleries, an interactive children's gallery, a 200-seat auditorium, classrooms, and a library and archive. Covering five centuries, the collection of more than 2,300 works includes John J. Audubon, Robert Bateman, Albert Bierstadt, George Catlin, John Clymer, Bob Kuhn and Charles M. Russell. Media range from oil, pastel, acrylic and watercolor to bronze, stone, pencil, charcoal, lithography and photography. The American Bison Collection explores man's relationship with buffalo since the 18C. Also featured is the largest body of work in the US by Carl Rungius.
