Bergisel hill was the site of battles in 1809 between Napoleon's troops and an uprising of Tyrol peasants, following the call to arms of a local hero, Andreas Hofer. He was shot the following year and has remained a symbol of independence for the Tyrol Region. The wooded hillock is today popular with the population of Innsbruck, who come here to walk and relax.
