Built by the Venetians after the fourth crusade (1204), the kastro forms a triangle pushed up to the cliff edge; Pounta Square lies at its base, and the church, Panagia Pantanassa, at its tip. Several lines of houses defended the town, a succession of façades side by side, without points of access, facing towards the interior and joined at their extremities by narrow streets, thus creating concentric enclosures. Nowadays, stairs and balconies soften this harsh medieval architecture.
