In this remote moorland setting, the fortress of the Wardens of the March (i.e. the Borders) occupied a strategic position enabling it to watch over the river and primary routes between Hawick and England. It was here that Mary, Queen of Scots rushed to the Earl of Bothwell, her future husband, when he had been injured.
