Encompassing the 149 miles of the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River, this remote region has changed little since Lewis and Clark ventured through in 1805. Designated a national monument in January 2001 and administered by the Bureau of Land Management, it is of historical, cultural, geological and ecological importance. Several outfitters in Fort Benton operate boat and canoe trips downstream.Extending from the national monument's eastern end, the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge holds 1,719sq mi of Missouri River wilderness around Fort Peck Reservoir - home to elk, pronghorn, prehistoric paddlefish and 200 species of birds. A 20mi self-guided auto tour begins 67mi northeast of Lewistown.
