Almost circular and reaching a height of 700m, Nisyros faces the narrow Turkish peninsula of Resadiye. A partially active volcano, this island has strange and sombre rock formations that will appeal to amateur geologists. Popular with day-trippers from Kos, the place regains its serenity come dusk. The capital, Mandraki, is one of the loveliest villages of the Dodecanese.
