Although its origins date back to the 16C, the current monastery, the biggest in Europe after Mafra in Portugal, is early 18C. The masterful restoration by Giancardo De Carlo restored the edifice to its former glory in the 1980s. A visit to the monastery, now part of the university, includes the cloisters, kitchens, a lovely main staircase and traces of the eruption of 1669. Don't miss Vaccarini hall and its ancient books.
