The huge cathedral was burned to the ground and ransacked in 1647 during the English Civil War. Built in the 13C according to a cruciform plan, it sports a central steeple, built a century later. In the chancel, a recess (south side) houses the remains of Bishop Miller MacGrath, twice married and father to nine children, who died in 1621 after having served both the Protestant and Catholic churches.
