Just inland from the beach lying at the far end of Punta del Este, don't miss la Cueva, a cave nicknamed the "Sistine Chapel" of the Caribbean. The work of Siboen Indians, the rock paintings were discovered after a shipwreck in 1910, and later studied by the famous Cuban anthropologist Fernando Ortíz in 1925. The images in the main cave are composed of concentric black and red circles, believed to have been used as a lunar calendar.
