The castle quarter was once on the ocean, but has gradually been assimilated into the city as the sea has encroached on the land. The Castle of Good Hope and Grand Parade stand in the centre of the quarter. This was where Nelson Mandela gave his famous speech in 1994, four years after being released from the South African prisons where he had spent nearly thirty years.
