This Benedictine abbey, founded in the late 10th century, was one of the most important in France. Its vineyards covered the entire hillside, and its forest extended as far as the Loire. In the 14th century, it was fortified and surrounded by a moat on the orders of Charles V; the elegant building housing the cellars and large granaries remains from that period. The 17th century saw the construction of the abbatial château, while the 18th century brought the building of the new abbey, driven by the Congregation of Saint-Maur.
