The river was once wider, but during construction of the Canadian National Railway in 1914, a rockslide occurred, narrowing the gap. Thereafter, upstream passage was almost impossible for the salmon, their spawning grounds being the lakes and streams throughout British Columbia's interior. A sharp decline in the Pacific salmon fishing industry occurred until "fishways" were constructed during the 1940s to enable the salmon to bypass the turbulent water.
