Originally a simple wooden hut erected in the middle of the fort in Belém's early days, the cathedral was reconstructed in 1755 by the Italian architect Antônio Landi in a blend of neo-Classical and Baroque-colonial styles. This is the starting point for the annual Círio procession that carries the statue of the Virgin to the Basílica N. S. de Nazaré.
