Most of Acadia National Park extends across Mount Desert Island, nicknamed "the place where the mountains touch the sea". This extensive island, which is almost cut in two by Somes Sound, remains a wild region dotted with pink granite peaks, dark forests and freshwater lakes. It is also home to the park's largest settlement, Bar Harbor, as well as tranquil villages and the delightful Loop Road which is popular with tourists.
