This thousand-year-old monastery literally clings to a cliff-face, in an extraordinary site. Dazzling white against the sombre rock, the building appears halfway up a sheer cliff, 300m above the water. Visiting this holy place is an other-worldly experience. Accompanied by a monk, visitors get to see the church with its fine icons, and the library, where embroidered sacred vestments, liturgical objects and precious manuscripts (10C-18C) are housed.
