Built by the Ottomans, the 15C Sultan Beyazit II mosque nestles in shaded public gardens. This pretty sanctuary is visible from quite a distance, thanks to the white stone of its two minarets decorated with red brick friezes. On the river side of the building, entrance to the mosque is via a magnificent portico with five bays, which are crowned with domes supported by ancient columns with capitals. In the prayer hall, the tympanum over the windows is framed with enamel faience, depicting white calligraphy on a blue background. Don't miss the marble minbar, the elegant decor of which stands out in these fairly plain surroundings.
