The interior of Faial's caldera (400 m deep and 1,450 m in diameter) is covered with cedars, ferns, junipers, box trees and samples of the island's original vegetation. The contours of the former lake, which was drained by the eruption of Capelinhos, are clearly visible on the very flat bottom.
