The tomb of Yononushi Ganashi, the first king of Okinoerabu, seems to have been set out in the foundations of his castle built in the 15C, of which only ruins remain. In the style of the Okinawa caves, a vaulted funeral room has been hewn out of the greyish coralline limestone. This cavity was supposed to call to mind the belly of a pregnant woman; according to Okinawan rites, this meant the deceased were returning to their origins. Statues to protect the ashes of the monarch and his wife and son are placed on the ground.
