There are several reasons why this restaurant run by Maximilian Strohe and his partner Ilona Scholl is so sought-after. First, they have created an attractive interior within this lovely old Kreuzberg building – featuring high stuccoed ceilings, wooden floors, art and quirky wallpaper, as well as a dining counter – not to mention the charming terrace set in the heart of the neighbourhood. Then there is the atmosphere, which feels both welcoming and informal, and is further enhanced by the relaxed yet highly professional service led by Ilona Scholl. At the core of its success, however, is the food. The chef-patron and his team create striking combinations of exceptional ingredients. The secret to their cooking lies in the intense sauces and stocks, which harmonise the various flavours and lend the dishes a certain je ne sais quoi. Diners can choose between two tasting menus of seven or eight courses – one omnivore and one vegetarian. Tip: Consider visiting Geschichtsspeicher Fichtebunker, a nearby museum.
