Alcázar de Colón, the former palace of Viceroy don Diego Colomb, built in the early 16C, was the headquarters of the Spanish Viceroys of Hispaniola. It fell into neglect for over 150 years, until its restoration in the 1950s according to the original plan. The unusual rectangular interior and the sumptuous furnishings reproduce the atmosphere of a Spanish royal palace. A terrace overlooks the Ozama River, while a gallery terrace, commanding a view of the Plaza de España, is separated from the former by a huge corridor that served as a reception hall.
